Tiger Woods was "sweating profusely" and appeared "lethargic and slow" after his crash last weekend, according to an arrest affidavit released Tuesday. The golfer told investigators with the Martin County Sheriff's Office that he had taken "a few" prescription drugs earlier in the day, and a deputy later found two hydrocodone pills in Woods's left pocket.
Wood was arrested Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a drug test, after the black Land Rover he was driving swerved to avoid rear-ending a pickup truck that had slowed down to make a turn. The Land Rover clipped the back of a trailer attached to the pickup truck, causing the SUV to roll over onto the driver's side. Woods is currently out of jail on bail and has pleaded not guilty.
TCPalm.com, the region's main newspaper, uploaded a copy of the affidavit. Woods told deputies on Friday that he had been looking down at his phone and changing the radio station while driving, causing him to miss that the pickup truck in front of him had slowed down. Because of Woods's appearance, a deputy asked to give the golfer a field sobriety test, which he agreed to do.
According to the affidavit, as Woods walked toward the MCSO vehicle, deputies saw him limp and stumble to the right. Woods also told a deputy he has had seven back surgeries, more than 20 operations on his leg, walks with a limp, and "his ankle seizes while walking." So the deputy had Woods sit on the vehicle's bumper for the field sobriety test.
Woods took off his sunglasses, and his eyes looked bloodshot and glassy with dilated pupils, the deputy wrote. Woods said he hadn't consumed any alcohol or illegal drugs. When asked if he took prescription medication, the document said he replied with "I take a few." Woods said he took medication for high blood pressure, cholesterol, ibuprofen, and Vicodin.
After the test, a deputy wrote, "I believed that Woods normal faculties were impaired, and he was unable to safely operate the motor vehicle." He was taken to Martin County Jail, where he took a breath test but refused to provide a urine sample.
